Size: tree, 30-50' average height and spread at maturity

Buds: pseudoterminal bud at an angle, orange brown, 4-6 scales

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 2-7" long, up to 6" wide, simple, variable in form, lobed to undivided, ovate to broad-ovate, serrate to dentate, acute to acuminate tips, dark green or yellow green

Twigs: many raised bundle scars, orange brown, shiny

Flowering: yellow green, in stalked pendulous catkins, monoecious or dioecious

Fruit: similar to a blackberry, color varies, blackish, pinkish, white, red

Bark: ashy orange or orange-brown when young, later brown
