Size: tree, 40-60' average height at maturity

Buds: imbricate, ovoid, chestnut brown, .25", terminal absent

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 3-6" long, 1.5-3" wide, simple, elliptic or ovate, acuminate tips, serrate margins, tearing a leaf produces strands of a rubbery substance, shiny dark green, no fall color

Twigs: stout, bloomy, olive-brown, chambered pith, breaking twigs also produces rubbery substance

Flowers: dioecious, inconspicuous clusters of stamens of a single pistil

Fruit: like a waxy flesy elm fruit with compressed wings, 1.5" long, oval, notched at apex

Bark: ridges and furrows on old trees, gray-brown
