Buds: several imbricate dark red-brown scales

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 2-5" long, 1-2.5" wide, simple, obovate to obovate-elliptic, rounded or emarginate at tip, margins entire, bluish to dark green, yellow, orange, amber, red, and red-purple in fall

Twigs: stems orangish

Flowers: dioecious, greenish, showy light pink panicle, up to 10" long and 7" wide, most visible during the summer

Fruit: small dry drupe

Bark: gray to gray-brown
