Size: tree, 20-25' average height at maturity

Buds: reddish, 1 or 2, globular at base of thorn, may be stalked or unstalked

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 1-4" long, .33-1.5" wide, simple, obovate to oblong obovate, rounded at tip, sharply serrate away from base, dark glossy green changes to bronze-red to purple-red in fall

Twigs: large thorns, up to 2", stout, usually curved, horizontal branching habit

Flowers: monoecious, white, up to .66" in diameter, flat clusters, bloom in May

Fruit: dull red pome, .5", lasting until late fall
