Leaves: evergreen, opposite, .5-2" long, .5-.75" wide, simple, oval to elliptic, tip acute or obtuse, margins entire, dark glossy green

Twigs: low trailing groundcover with shining green glabrous stems, petiole bases connected by stipular line

Flowers: monoecious, solitary 1" flowers, bloom in March-April, colors include white, blue, purple, burgundy, mauve, reddish, etc.

Fruit: follicle, rarely produced

Bark: exfoliates in small plates on older trees, revealing orange underbark
