Leaves: evergreen, alternate, often crowded and appearing whorled, 2-4" long, .5-1.5" wide, simple, ovate to obovate, broadest above middle, upper third coarsely serrate, lower two-thirds entire, glossy, yellow-green to dark green

Twigs: upright, greenish

Flowers: monoecious, upright spikes of about 2", borne terminally, bloom March-April

Fruit: whitish berrylike drupe, about .5", rare
