Buds: no true terminal bud, .25-.38" long, ovoid, conical, tapering at both ends, acute at apex, 5-7 scales, shining red tinged with brown at ends of scales, glabrous

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 2-4.5" or more in length and width, simple, thick, broad ovate to round, blunt or rounded at apex, cordate or truncate, entire, heart-shaped

Twigs: rounded, reddish brown, epidermis peels on first season's growth, small gray rounded lenticels

Flowers: perfect, paired, purple, .5' diameter, 5 petals, bloom in October
