Size: shrub, 3-6' average height and spread at maturity

Buds: short, conical, with about 4 dark scales

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 1-3" long, .5-1.5" wide, simple, elliptic to obovate, tips obtuse, margins entire, light green changes to clear yellow in fall

Twigs: buds nearly surrounded by narrow leaf scars, twigs glabrous, slender, very flexible

Flowers: very early, monoecious, pale yellow, clusters of 3-4 from nodes

Fruit: oval, .33" long, pale green or reddish with 1 large shiny brown seed

Bark: olive to brown with small white lenticels
