Buds: small, ovoid, loosely scaled, brown, pubescent

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 1.5-4" long, .75-2" wide, simple, obovate-oblong, acute to short acuminate tips, sharply serrate toward tip, medium to dark green in summer, yellow to golden brown in fall

Twigs: pubescent brown stems

Flowers: July-August, 5-petaled white flowers, 2-6" long, .75" wide, fragrant

Fruit: remaining through winter, roundish 3-valved capsules

Bark: brown when young
