Size: tree, 70-100' average height at maturity

Buds: conical, dark brown, slightly ribbed, covered by single cell

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 6-7" long, 5-10" wide, simple, 3-5 lobes, triangular-ovate or broad triangular, sinuses acute or rounded, medium to dark green

Twigs: stout, often zigzagging, leaf scar completely surrounds bud, many bundle scars

Flowers: monoecious, dense spheres, males and females on separate peduncles

Fruit: in a round, many-seeded head, usually in groups of 2-3, individual sees have conspicuous tapering bristle at apex

Bark: exfoliates in plates, inner bark creamy yellow
