Size: tree, 60-100' average height at maturity

Buds: imbricate, often with acute tips, brownish

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 2-3" long and wide, simple, fan shaped, often incised of divided at apex, bright green, yellow in fall

Twigs: short, stout, spurlike branches, 2 bundle scars, exfoliate in gray papery shreds

Flowers: dioecious, inconspicuous, males green in 1" catkins, femailes on pedicle up to 2" with 1-2 greenish ovules, bloom March-April

Fruit: spherical tan to orangish seed up to 1", unpleasant odor, nutlike seed inside fleshy outer layer

Bark: gray-brown ridges, darker furrows
