Size: vine, 30-50' average span at maturity

Buds: narrow and sharply pointed, 3 outer scales, appressed

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 10-15", pinnately compound, 11-19 leaflets, each leaflet 1.5-3" long, ovate-oblong, acuminate tips and entire margins, bright green, may be yellowish in fall

Twigs: twining, light tan or brown, 2 spine-like projections at top corners of leaf scar

Flowers: monoecious, pendulous clusters 8-20" long, bloom in April or May, many different colors in cultivars, including shades of purple, white, pink, and bluish

Fruit: brown pod 4-6" long

Bark: grayish, sometimes fluted
