Size: tree, 40-50' average height at maturity
Buds: imbricate, conical or ovoid with sharp points, clustered at tip of twig, often 2 buds at nodes, reddish brown
Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 3-5" long, 1.5-2.5" wide, simple, elliptic obovate, long acuminate tips and sharply serrate teeth, bronze when young, later dark green, changes to bronze or red in fall
Twigs: reddish brown with prominent lenticels, large gray-brown areas on stem
Flowers: monoecious, pink, single, up to 1.5" across, bloom in April, clusters of 2-6
Fruit: ovoid .33" drupe, purple black
Bark: rich polished reddish or chestnut brown with long horizontal lenticels
