Leaves: deciduous, opposite, 1-2" long, .33-1" wide, simple, elliptic to oblong-obovate, tips acute or obtuse, margins entire, medium to dark green, may be russet to purplish in fall
Twigs: green when young, sometimes with slight purple tinge, pubescent
Flowers: monoecious, white, unpleasant fragrance, in .75-1.5" axillary panicles, bloom in June
Fruit: black to blue-black, .25", berry-like, appear in fall
Bark: older stems gray, somewhat pubescent
