Size: tree, 50-70' average height at maturity
Buds: small, inconspicuous
Leaves: deciduous, spirally arranged, may appear alternate or scattered, .5-.75" long, .0625-.083" wide, soft, flat, needlelike, apiculate (ending abruptly in short pointed tip), soft sage green, russet to brown or orange-brown in fall
Twigs: leaf scars raised, most prominent on older wood, twigs slender, green in first year, brownish later, with firm bark
Flowers: monoecious, male flowers in drooping panicles up to 5", females are tiny green conelets to .1"
Fruit: globular cone, .5-1.5", green or purple when young, brown when mature
Bark: dark gray to reddish brown, slightly exfoliating
