Size: tree, 80-120' average height at maturity

Buds: valvate, flattened, blunt at apex, mitten-shaped

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 3-8" wide, simple, truncate at apex, with short acuminate lobe on each side, 3-4 smaller lobes near base, bright green on top, paler beneath, changes to bright yellow in fall

Twigs: stipular line completely encircles twig at each leaf scar

Flowering: monoecious, tulip-shaped with 6 greenish-yellow petals, orangish inside, lightly fragrant, bloom May-June

Fruit: conelike cluster of samaras, often remaining until winter

Bark: grayish interlacing furrows and ridges
