Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 1.25-5" long, .75-2" wide, simple, ovate to oblong-ovate, acuminate or apiculate, sharply serrate, dark green, can be yellow, orange, brown, red, or red-purple in fall
Twigs: slender, somewhat zigzagging
Flowers: monoecious, inconspicuous clusters, bloom in April
Fruit: kidney-bean-shaped drupe, .25"
Bark: red-brown when young, later gray-brown, exfoliating
