Leaves: deciduous, alternate, each leaflet 1-2" long, pinnately compound, 5-9 leaflets, each 1-2" long, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, tips acute or obtuse, margins serrate, rugose, shiny dark green in summer, sometimes orange or red in fall

Twigs: stout, extremely abundant tan prickls at base to tip of stem, stems gray or reddish gray

Flowers: monoecious, reddish, purple, white, up to 3.5", very fragrant, bloom in summer, many cultivars

Fruit: hips very large, up to 1" across or larger, orange to red
