Size: tree, 40-60' average height at maturity, 80-100' spread

Buds: minute, ovoid, few scales

Leaves: evergreen, spirally arranged, scattered on long shoots, dense fascicles on spurs, .75-1.5" long, pointed at tip, stiff, dark or bright green

Twigs: many densely arranged branchlets spreading horizontally

Flowers: monoecious, males yellow-brown with erect catkins, females purplish

Fruit: stalked barrel-shaped purple-brown cones, 3-5" long, 2-2.5" wide

Bark: gray-brown or brown
