Twigs: hollow pith, glabrous, green when young, leaf scars connected by stipular line

Flowers: monoecious, pink to white with varying cultivars, .75-1" long, in axillary pairs, bloom in May

Fruit: .25" red berry (yellow or orange in cultivars), often produced in pairs

Bark: brownish
