Celastrus orbiculatus, Chinese Bittersweet



Size: vine, 33-40' average height at maturity

Buds: small with several pairs of scales, rough

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 2-5" long and nearly as wide, simple, obovate to orbicular, shiny green, changes to yellow in fall

Twigs: light brown, solid white pith, decurrent lines, leaf scars slightly raised

Flowers: plants mainly of one sex, with some flowers of opposite sex, inconspicuous, yellow-white, in small axillary clusters

Fruit: yellow capsule that opens in 3 valves, containing a fleshy crimson aril

Bark: brown to tan
