Size: shrub, groundcover, 3' average height at maturity

Buds: small, ovoid, approximately 2 pairs of rather loose scales

Leaves: opposite, .5-1.5" long, .25-.75" wide, acute, rounded or cuneate at base, dentate, lustrous dark green above, turning bronze-red in winter, paler and glabrous underside with the exception of a bearded area near base of midrib

Twigs: pubescent and reddish purple to reddish brown when young, exfoliating stem (in long threads) with light inner bark, leaf scars connected by stipular line

Flowers: white to pink, funnel shape, .75-1" long, slightly fragrant, long sepals (2-5 each)

Fruit: leathery achene with one seed
