Size: tree, 30-50' average height at maturity

Buds: large .5" terminals, ovoid

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 1.5-3" long and wide, simple, ovate to broad ovate, sometimes elliptic ovate, margins crenate, tip acuminate, leathery, shiny dark green, shades of yellow, scarlet, purple, and orange in fall, often with pattern in the center of individual leaves

Twigs: stout, dark brown when mature,

Flowers: monoecious, white, up to .75" wide, in 3" clusters, bloom late April to early May

Fruit: pome, up to .5", tan to brown

Bark: shiny brown when young, gray-brown with furrows when older
