Twigs: slender, glabrous, small leaf scars, stipules very small dark black points on twig surface at each side of leaf scar

Flowers: dioecious, white, males in clusters of 6 or more in leaf axils, females in smaller clusters

Fruit: bright red, .25-.5", often in pairs

Bark: dark gray, brown, black on old stems
