Size: tree, 70-80' average height at maturity, 60-90' spread

Buds: black, contrasting with twig, about 2 indistinct scales, persistent leaf base often associated with terminal

Leaves: deciduous, opposite, 10-12", pinnately compound, 7-11 leaflets, each leaflet 2-3.5" long, 1-1.33" wide, ovate-oblong to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate tips, serrate margins, dark green above, lighter below, can show dull yellow in fall

Twigs: leaf scar slightly raised, straight across top, u-shaped, somewhat stout and most often slightly flattened at nodes

Flowers: essentially dioecious, but with some perfect flowers, not an ornamental asset

Fruit: 1-1.5" samara with 1 wing

Bark: gray or gray-brown
