Size: shrub, 6-10' average height at maturity (10-15' spread)

Buds: lateral buds hidden beneath slightly raised leaf scars

Leaves: deciduous, alternate, 9", pinately compound, 9-15 leaflets, each leaflet 1-2" elliptic to oblong-ovate or oblong, entire and acute to obtuse mucronate margins, blue-green

Twigs: stipular thorns and abundant flexible brownish bristles, gray to red-brown on older wood

Flowers: monoecious, pink or purplish, not fragrant, in pendulous 2-4" clusters

Fruit: brown pod covered with bristles, twists after opening
